The Black Mountain Blues Society and White Horse Black Mountain present the Dark City Blues Jam, a twice-monthly celebration of blues, soul, grit, and community.
We invite musicians and music lovers alike to experience the raw energy of live blues in the heart of the Blue Ridge. 1st and 3rd Tuesdays hosted by Peggy Ratusz and Bill Mattocks on 3rd Tues.
Whether you are a seasoned player looking to sit in with a powerhouse house band or a fan ready to soak up the atmosphere, the Dark City Blues Jam offers an authentic, high-energy environment for all. We want to hear what you’ve got!
Signing up to play is simple: Sign-Up Sheet: The list opens at the venue starting at 6:30 PM.
The Process: Musicians are encouraged to arrive early to secure a slot. You can sign up as an individual or a partial group. SIgn ups end 10 min before showtime. What to Bring: Bring your own instrument (guitars, harps, horns, etc.).

Bill Mattocks is a renowned blues musician known for his powerful vocals and harmonica skills. Originally from the Pacific Northwest, he relocated to Western North Carolina and has become a prominent figure in the region’s blues scene. His music style encompasses various genres, including blues, soul, funk, and R&B, drawing inspiration from legendary artists like Robert Johnson, B.B. King, and Howlin’ Wolf and JJ Cale.
Some of his notable projects include:

– Bill Mattocks Blues: A Blues project showcasing Bill’s blues performances accompanied by Kevin Sanders on keys and vocals, Howie Johnson on guitar and vocals, Charlie Wilkinson on bass and vocals and David Cohen on drums.
– The Mattocks-Johnson Band: A blues-rock band featuring Bill on harmonica, guitar and vocals, alongside Howie Johnson on guitar and vocals.
–The Howie Johnson-Bill Mattocks Acoustic Duo: A collaboration with guitarist Howie Johnson, focusing on acoustic blues and classic rock covers.
–The BBC trio: A more eclectic americana trio including Bill Loftus and Michael “Country” Carver, performing a mix of blues, roots, and folk.

Bill has performed at various venues in Western North Carolina, including White Horse Black Mountain, Sierra Nevada Brewing, Orange Peel, Wicked Weed Brewing, Mills River Brewing, Bold Rock and Southern Appalachian Brewery, and has gained recognition as one of the most sought-after blues harp musicians in the South.
